As an island lover, my recent escapade to São Miguel in the Azores was like stepping into a vivid postcard. The island, a hidden gem in the midst of the Atlantic Ocean, offered an eclectic mix of natural beauty, underwater wonders, and culinary feasts. I spent an exhilarating week there, diving into both the ocean and the island's culture.

Diving into the Deep Blue

Diving was the cornerstone of my trip. São Miguel, with its rich marine life and intriguing underwater landscapes, beckoned. Each day, I geared up with anticipation, though we weren't always lucky with visibility. The ocean, like life, is unpredictable, but each dive was a unique experience. The glimpses of colorful marine life and the tranquil silence of the underwater world were mesmerizing. Even on days when the clarity wasn't perfect, the thrill of exploring the unknown depths was undiminished.

Exploring the Island's Charm

Renting a car was a decision I pat myself on the back for. São Miguel, with its lush landscapes and quaint villages, is meant to be explored at one's own pace. The drives were scenic, with every turn revealing panoramas that were a feast for the eyes. I was constantly torn between the desire to stop at every viewpoint and the urge to see what lay beyond the next bend.

The island's volcanic origin has sculpted it into a land of stunning vistas. From the mystic lakes of Sete Cidades to the hot springs of Furnas, nature's artistry was on full display. Hiking trails wound through green pastures, leading to breathtaking views that made me stop in my tracks, just to take it all in.

A Culinary Journey

The seafood in São Miguel is as fresh as it gets. I indulged in local delicacies, savoring the flavors of the sea in every bite. The island's restaurants, often with views of the ocean, offered an array of dishes that were a delight to the palate. From grilled limpets to the famous cozido das Furnas, cooked underground using volcanic heat, every meal was a celebration of local cuisine.

In Reflection

Despite the occasional challenge with diving visibility, São Miguel was a reminder of nature's unpredictable beauty. It's an island that looks as stunning above water as it does below. The blend of adventurous dives, leisurely explorations, and culinary delights made my week in São Miguel a memory I'll cherish.
